Four handcrafted POMTIQUE pet portrait pendants featuring two cat designs and two dog designs, showcasing detailed eye and fur sculpting in gold metal

What actually makes a pet portrait pendant look real? Here's what I've figured out so far

What Makes a Custom Pet Portrait Look Like Your Pet?

When we turn a pet photo into a pendant, one of the biggest challenges is keeping the features that make that particular pet recognizable.

For us, two details are especially important: the eyes and the small facial details such as fur, whiskers, and the shape of the muzzle.

The Eyes

The eyes are one of the most important parts of a pet portrait.

For dogs, we pay close attention to the shape and position of the eyes, as well as the surrounding brow and eyelid area. Small changes in these details can make a big difference to the expression of the finished pendant.

For cats, the eyes often have a different shape and character. We pay attention to the outer shape, pupil, and surrounding contours to keep the portrait recognizable while still allowing the design to work as a piece of jewelry.

Fur and Facial Details

We don't try to reproduce every strand of fur from a photograph. Instead, we select the details that are most important to the pet's appearance.

The shape of the muzzle, ears, forehead, and fur pattern can often tell us more than hundreds of tiny lines.

For dogs, the brow, muzzle, ears, and overall head shape are particularly important.

For cats, whiskers can also be an important part of the portrait. A few carefully placed lines can help preserve the character of the original photo without making the pendant look overly complicated.

Turning a Photo Into Jewelry

A photograph contains far more information than a small pendant can reproduce.

The design process is therefore not simply about copying the photograph. We need to decide which features should be kept, simplified, or emphasized so that the portrait remains recognizable at a much smaller scale.

That's why every pet portrait is designed individually.

We start with your photos, develop the portrait design, and then turn that design into a three-dimensional model for casting.

The goal is simple: when you look at the finished pendant, you should be able to recognize your pet.

See Your Design Before We Craft It

Because every pet is different, we offer a Free Design Preview before production begins.
